I use my observations of my surroundings to explore intricate tones and colour juxtapositions. With pared down and minimal composition and working often within a square format using strong horizontals, I use repeated motifs such as the tree to draw the eye into my exploration of the painting surface. I hope to reveal on closer inspection a quiet, restrained yet rich palette of colour and tone, echoing the landscape spaces I encounter and conveying the atmosphere of the setting.
Retaining a sense of the hand in a variety of mark making is an important part of the work and my larger paintings take time to complete as I build up many layers of colour. I want to create something to look at which is dynamic and interesting yet at the same time calm, composed and balanced. Like a jewel for the eye.
