Katrina first learnt to make jewellery through short courses at Edinburgh College of Art and West Dean College, before spending a month in Florence at Le Arte Oriafe

…Being determined to learn more, I recently completed a full-time diploma course at Fife College. I love experimenting and trying out different techniques to make jewellery with a distinct style. My starting point is the natural environment, usually the plants and wildlife of the Scottish Borders. These influence the textures, shapes and colours that I use.

Many of my pieces use the ancient Korean gilding technique known as Keum Boo which involves applying thin sheets of high carat gold foil to silver using heat and pressure which produces a permanent diffusion bond. I then like to oxidise the silver in order to blacken it and highlight the gold on the surface.

My love of colour has also lead to experiments with aluminium. I apply various inks and dyes to pre-anodised aluminium sheet before forming it into pieces of colourful jewellery.
