Janet refers to herself as a contemporary still life artist. Having obtained an honours degree in Industrial Design (specialising in woven textiles) from the Scottish College of Textiles (now part of Heriot Watt University), Janet then worked in the textile industry for 14 years. Working from her home, in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, she has grown her status as an artist with numerous paintings and mixed media artworks in group exhibitions across Scotland.
“I love colour and pattern!!! My mixed media still life paintings feature “treasures” – textile samples, china, old bottles… collected over the years.
Fruit and flowers are placed with these to give freshness to the composition. These arrangements are looked on from an aerial perspective.
The importance of the fabrics and their construction within the paintings reflect my past in textile design. The aerial view allows the shapes to be flattened and refined. Thus, the traditional subject matter of still life takes on a quirky, more contemporary feel.”
