Marta Utsler

Marta Utsler was born in England and moved to the United States aged 5. In 2010, she returned to the UK and lived in London for a time; then, discovering St. Ives in Cornwall as a renowned art community, she was based, and exhibited her work there, for 4 ½ years. Next came an enjoyable and most successful time in Scotland. Marta now lives and works in Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland.

Marta refers to herself as an abstract painter working primarily in acrylic. Her process is unplanned: she builds up the paint with layers to create surface texture, altering and adding what is most essential to the development of the work. Through this editing process an application may be rejected because it might become unrelated to the whole of the piece, forcing her to probe new approaches to modify an existing idea. She explains: “My marks have true purpose that translate into a unique form and ultimately into the final interpretation. From there, a subconscious notion is created and I believe my work has a passionate yet quiet drama, at times intense while at other times sentimental, with an awareness of place and a sense of atmosphere.”

Marta’s work is in private and corporate collections in the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland and Australia, including work owned by a member of the prominent Guggenheim family in New York.
