Stretching that line – a new wave in woodworking
5th March – 28th May 2016
The White Fox Gallery is delighted to bring to Coldstream for the very first time, a collection of artworks by Tom Cooper, outstanding Fine furniture maker and Wood turner, and one of Scotland’s most enthusiastic advocates for Scottish trees and timber at home and abroad. The exhibition, Tom’s 1st Solo show, will open on 5th March, following the opening (12 noon – 3:30pm) to be held on the same day.
With works sold at home and abroad, and a well-earned reputation built over his first 11 years of trading, Tom produces imaginative and compelling work which challenges the customary divide between Art and craft. He is a brilliant wood craftsman-artist (or Artisan d’art as he would deservedly be referred to in France, my home country) who relentlessly finds a new edge, a new line in each of the projects he embarks on: a wave found in the grain of a timber will be celebrated in a finely turned bowl, or will inspire a sculptural twist, the beauty of a natural-edge will soften a heavier vessel, and the slender waist of one of his cooper’s bloom lamps will be effortlessly stretched to the limit.
In all his beautifully fluid and elegant creations, Tom combines complete mastery of traditional skills with flair, inventiveness and sensitivity for the material used. The timber, he uses, all originates from windblown Scottish – and Scottish Borders – trees.
Despite his well-earned and far reaching reputation, Tom had never contemplated a Solo show until now. We are therefore absolutely delighted to be the first gallery in the Scottish Borders to display a comprehensive body of his creations. Tom is a maker of outstanding stature whose work is eminently collectable, with any of his creations worthy of becoming part of a family’s heirloom. His craftsmanship is pure artistry!
Having gained a BA hons in Furniture design and Applied Arts from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2001, Tom set up in business as self-employed furniture maker in 2004.
He specialises in the design and hand crafting of both traditional and contemporary furniture, from tables and chairs to fitted wardrobes and solid timber kitchens, as well as smaller items such as jewellery boxes and turned bowls.
Clients include: The Royal College of Surgeons, Innis and Gunn brewery, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost and R&A St Andrews golf club.
