The day in a nutshell

The main objective of this Level 2 workshop is to achieve more effective compositions in your photographs. We will carefully consider all the visual elements seen within the camera viewfinder and also begin to look at how weather conditions and the quality of the light will affect the subject or scene. The day is about how best to express your personal vision, not just in what you photograph but in how you photograph it.

What to expect

Your tutor for the day is Stephen Whitehorne, an award-winning professional landscape, portrait and property photographer with nearly 3 decades of experience. Stephen will present tutorials and practical demonstrations which will include digital slide shows. An important part of the day (approximately half the total workshop time) will be taking photographs outdoors, experimenting with the ‘rules’, (or ‘tools’) of composition. At the same time you will have the opportunity to revise and refine your camera skills, to develop your existing knowledge of basic photographic technique. The nature and landscapes of Coldstream and the Hirsel Estate will be our subject matter. The day will conclude with a review of the photographs we have taken.

What to bring

  • Ideally, a Digital SLR camera with lens/lenses; although a simple compact camera will do
  • An empty camera memory card
  • Your camera manual
  • A tripod, if you have one
  • Photographs you would like to share/discuss
  • What we will cover

What we will cover

Meeting up – 9.45am – At the White Fox Gallery – Introductions, tea & coffee.

Tutorial/Slide show – 10.00 – 11.00pm – A tutorial, with digital slide show, outlining the 8 fundamental ‘rules’ of composition. In this session we will also briefly look at how the weather conditions and the time of day can influence the outcome of your photograph.

Quick review of camera settings – 11.00 – 11.30am – Making sure our cameras are set correctly for File Type, ISO, Colour Space, White Balance, Exposure mode, Image Optimisation etc.; the aim being to apply the settings for your camera that will best realise your photographic objectives.

Taking pictures – 11.30 – 12.30pm – First practical session outdoors in the vicinity of our workshop base, taking photographs while beginning to systematically work through, and apply, the rules of composition to what you are photographing.

Lunch – 12.30 – 1pm – In the gallery from lunch purchases at Streamers Sandwich Bar (allow about an extra £5 for this) or bring your own sandwiches etc – gallery will provide tea, coffee, biscuits etc.

Taking pictures – 1 – 3pm – The outdoor session continues in Coldstream and the beautiful grounds of the Hirsel Estate, including a quick visit to A Year at the Hirsel exhibition with composition in mind. We will work through further aspects of composition, trying out more of the ‘rules’ in the context of the light and conditions that we are blessed with on the day. Stephen will be alongside you, helping you find solutions for better compositions and resolving any issues with regard to using your camera.

Tea and biscuits – 3:00 – 3:30 pm – Returning to the gallery for refreshments.

Review Session – 3:30 – 5.00pm – Reviewing your photographs through digital projection, “the good”, and just as importantly, “the bad and the ugly.” Looking at and discussing what worked but also where mistakes were made and why.
