The day in a nutshell

This workshop builds on a basic grasp of using your camera to best achieve your photographic objectives (Workshop 1) as well as on your experience of experimenting with the various approaches to composition (Workshop 2). The main objective in this Level 3 workshop is to appreciate how light, the single most important element in photography, will determine what we photograph and how and when we photograph it. We will also explore how to use colour appropriately whilst, at the same time, being aware of how the weather conditions, the time of day and the time of year will all influence our options. A relatively gentle photo-ramble will follow the tutorials, combining our keen enthusiasm for photography with a pleasant autumn walk!

What to expect

Your tutor for the day is Stephen Whitehorne, a professional landscape, portrait and property photographer with nearly 3 decades of experience. Stephen will present tutorials and practical demonstrations which will include digital slide shows, discussing and illustrating the principles of working with light and using colour. Following lunch, we will be taking photographs outdoors whilst enjoying a walk in the countryside close to Coldstream. We will explore the hidden, more far-flung corners of the Hirsel Estate, and other locations. Whilst we will be working with the available light and the colour that we are blessed with on the day, the walk has been devised to include as great a variety of landscapes and subjects for our cameras as possible. The day will conclude with a return to the gallery for refreshments.

What to bring

  • Ideally, a Digital SLR camera with lens/lenses; although a bridge camera or simple compact will do
  • An unused memory card
  • Your camera manual
  • A small tripod, or a monopod, or photo-walking stick, if you have one
  • Sturdy shoes or walking boots are recommended

What we will cover

Meeting up – 9.45am – At the White Fox Gallery – Introductions, tea & coffee.

Tutorial/Slide show – 10.00 – 11.00pm – A tutorial, with digital slide show outlining the principles of working with the available light in landscape photography and using colour to best effect. We will see how the quality of the light depends on various factors and why an understanding of the relationship between light and landscape is so crucial. We will also consider what a photographer can learn from landscape painting.

Quick review of camera settings – 11.00 – 11.30am – Ensuring our cameras are set correctly for File Type, ISO, Colour Space, White Balance, Exposure mode, Image Optimisation etc.; the aim being to apply the settings for your camera that will best realise your photographic objectives.

Filters and kit for photo-rambling – 11.30 – 12.30pm – An overview of the various equipment and accessory options when combining our passion for photography with the opportunities that come from a good walk in the countryside.

Lunch – 12.30 – 1pm – In the gallery from lunch purchases at Streamers Sandwich Bar (allow about an extra £5 for this) or bring your own sandwiches etc – gallery will provide tea, coffee, biscuits etc.

Taking pictures – 1 – 4pm – The afternoon is taken up entirely with an outdoor session of photography whilst enjoying a good walk within the wider boundaries of the Hirsel Estate or other similar location. As always, Stephen will be alongside you, to help you work and create compositions that make the best of the light and conditions as we find them on the day. There will also be practical demonstrations of using filters, adapted walking sticks, bean bags, etc. while we are actually taking photographs.

Tea and biscuits – 4:15 – 4:30 pm – Returning to the gallery for refreshments before goodbyes.

Reviewing photographs post workshop – Due to the longer time requirement for the photography session during this workshop, photographs taken during the workshop will not be reviewed on the day. However, following the workshop, Stephen will be more than happy to discuss and comment on any photographs taken and which you may wish to send by email.
